with glittering eyes

A journey through Peace Corps: Cambodia

Round 3

I’m in Phnom Penh on medical again. I developed a stye-like infection in two places on my lower left eyelid, and it just kept getting progressively more swollen and painful so I came in today to get it checked out.

Joanne looked at it and decided to take me to an ophthamologist.

He takes two quick looks and says, “You need surgery.”

Cool.

So now I’m post-surgery, sitting in a bed in my hotel room.

All he did was make two 3mm incisions on my lower left eyelid to remove the necrotic flesh and pus from the styes in my eye (after administering two 0.5cc shots of some local anesthetic–which hurt a LOT, actually, since that’s such a sensitive area!).

I was sent back with antibiotic eye drops and the instruction to not wash my face tonight. Swelling will go away by tomorrow, but bruising from his applying pressure and squeezing the pus out won’t go away for another week.

In other words: it’ll look like I have a black eye for a week.

This will be fun.
